Periodontal disease or periodontitis is when bacteria gets under the gum causing pockets to form and subsequently damaging the surrounding bone. This may eventually lead to tooth loss and in extreme cases heart and lung disease.
There are many causes of periodontal disease, but the good news is that it's largely preventable. Good oral hygiene, brushing twice a day and proper flossing will reduce your chances of developing this disease.
If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, your dentist or hygienist will need to see you every three to four months to maintain and monitor your gums. We will often refer patients to a Periodontist who will assess and treat the disease.
