World Oral Health Day is a global health awareness campaign dedicated to improving oral hygiene and promoting the importance of good oral health for people of all ages. Observed every year on 20 March, the day encourages individuals, communities, and health professionals to take action toward preventing oral diseases and maintaining healthy smiles.

The initiative was created by the FDI World Dental Federation, an international organisation representing more than one million dentists worldwide. Although the concept was introduced earlier, World Oral Health Day was first celebrated globally in 2013, when the organisation expanded the campaign to reach a wider international audience. Since then, it has grown into one of the largest global movements dedicated to oral health education and advocacy.

Each year, World Oral Health Day is supported by a theme and campaign designed to raise awareness about key oral health issues. For example, the “Be Proud of Your Mouth” campaign (2021–2023) encouraged people to value their oral health as an essential part of overall wellbeing. Another campaign, “Say Ahh: Think Mouth, Think Health,” highlighted the connection between oral health and broader health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. This years theme is “A Happy mouth is...A Happy Life”. These campaigns often include community events, educational programs, social media initiatives, and partnerships with dental professionals, schools, and public health organisations around the world.

The importance of World Oral Health Day lies in its focus on prevention and education. Oral diseases—including tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer—affect billions of people globally and can have serious consequences for overall health, nutrition, speech, and quality of life. Despite this, many of these conditions are largely preventable through simple practices such as regular brushing and flossing, balanced nutrition, and routine dental check-ups.

World Oral Health Day serves as a reminder that caring for our mouths is an essential part of caring for our bodies. By raising awareness, supporting education, and encouraging healthy habits, the campaign empowers individuals and communities to take proactive steps toward better oral health. Ultimately, its message is clear and compassionate: a healthy mouth contributes not only to a confident smile, but also to a healthier, more fulfilling life.
