Fissure sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the grooves (fissures) of the back teeth—where decay often starts. These grooves can be deep and hard to clean, making them susceptible to plaque buildup and cavities. Sealants act as a barrier, protecting enamel from food particles and bacteria. The procedure is quick, painless, and significantly reduces the risk of tooth decay in molars, which are essential for chewing.
